Do I sound white?

Growing up, that was something I always heard. You sound white or you sound proper. And until I could appreciate my properness as it were, those types of comments used to hurt my feelings. I was only being true to myself. I admit, I grew up mostly around Caucasions and went to school with them. I was in a sense, a product of my environment. In writing this blog, I realized my "proper" way of speaking is what partially lead me to pursue a career in news media. What other industry could I use my "correctness" for profit? News! That's what they say on television. And if they can use it on tv, surely it's correct. So aside from being a ham, having a genuine interest current events, and wanting to work with the public, I had the voice and words to go along with it. I've since learned to my properness. Although, I still wonder what sounding white is. I'm only speaking proper English or Standard English or Prescriptive English. I speak the language we've all been exposed/taught in school. My greatest joy, is when people have a certain perception of me, until I start talking. Or when I speak to someone over the phone, then we meet in person. I L-O-V-E it! So if sounding "white" is wrong, then I don't want to be right.

It's because, not cuz...

I know I probably sounded like a snob a few weeks ago. My son's football team was working on a slogan for t-shirts. We tossed around a few ideas before coming up with the best one. Anyway, the slogan we decided on is "Fear The YellowJackets, Cuz It's Going Down!" I obviously had a problem with that. I didn't want the word "cuz" or "itz." I wanted Fear...because it's going down.

My argument was it's grammatically correct and I don't want incorrect grammar on my t-shirt. But one of the parents said, "we live in the hood and don't use the word because. We say cuz." And "itz" just looks better. I responded with, "I live in the hood too and I say because and spell it's the right way. We went back and forth for about 10 minutes.

Needless to say, I was out-numbered. So I had to compromise. I was like, I'll give you "cuz" if you'll give me "it's." And after a few minutes, we were all in agreement. They got what they wanted and I got my apostrophe s.

It was too funny. And now I'm the official letter writer for the team. Anytime, a notice needs to be sent to the parents, they ask me. Me and my trusty grammar book.

Yes, another small victory for proper grammar.

My former boss isn't as bright as he thinks he is

The poor grammar talk has made me more cautious of my own writing and speaking. I walk around on eggshells, constantly second-guessing myself. If I'm going to call someone else out, I have to be at the top of my game. Anyway, I started thinking about an evaluation my former boss prepared. As I read his comments, I noticed he used the wrong tense of your. He should have used you're. After reading that, I totally lost what little respect I had for him. Especially since he sat across from me with his legs crossed and a smug look on his face, while he talked about all the things I did wrong. He was making around $60K and couldn't write a simple sentence correctly. If only I could have called him on it back then. But hey, I can poke fun of him now. employee 1 - employer 0.
